Do you know if your expansion vessel and safety valves are letting out water? Pore pressure in the heating system is often due to a faulty expansion vessel or a leaking safety valve. Quite often the outlet runs directly down into a manhole, without any opportunity for keeping an eye on any discharge. Don’t do that!
It should be easy to monitor safety valves and expansion vessels so you can quickly detect any problems with the system. In the worst case, leakage from the safety valve can be mistaken for hidden leakage in the system. In such cases, costly leak detection could have been avoided if you had kept an eye on the outlet.
The easiest solution is to connect the Indi indicator vessel to the outlet. This makes it easy to keep track of when safety valves release fluid. Indi can be installed in a clearly visible position on the wall close to the safety valve, with the valve outlet running through Indi. The waste pipe is then run from Indi’s broad waste outlet to the nearest floor drain. If the safety valve releases water, the level in the vessel rises and the red marked indicator emerges from the lid and is easily visible. If the pressure has been too high, something needs to be rectified – often the expansion vessel.
